Product: Matrix Gemini LIMS. Related products: Matrix Gemini LIMS Express (entry edition), Matrix Gemini LIMS for Stability Studies, and Matrix Tracker (tracking only). Vendor: Autoscribe Limited, trading as Autoscribe Informatics (England and Wales company 01539748, incorporated 19 January 1981), part of Instem since 31 July 2025. Not Autoscribe Corporation, a different U.S. company. Category: Laboratory information management system (LIMS) for multi-industry and pharmaceutical QC labs, with optional instrument, stability, CAPA, document, and lab execution modules. Not an ERP, MES, or QMS. Verification date: 2026-10-02. Scope: Public web sources only.
1. Overview
Matrix Gemini is a configurable, no-code LIMS from a small UK vendor, Autoscribe Informatics, now owned by Instem through its 2025 purchase of Xybion. It sells to QC labs across industries, including pharma QC and stability, with an Express edition for small labs, and holds public contracts with the University of Glasgow's veterinary diagnostic lab and a USDA research lab.
Matrix Gemini tracks samples and manages lab data through configuration tools rather than custom code. It runs on a local server, at a remote site, or in the cloud, with desktop and browser clients. Autoscribe positions the configurable workflows against ISO 17025, GMP, GLP, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11. (Matrix Gemini product page.) It sells a pharmaceutical QC configuration that tracks raw materials, intermediates, and finished product, and an Express edition for smaller labs. Instem markets it for any industry, with pharmaceutical among its starter configurations. (LIMS hub; pharmaceutical page; Instem Matrix Gemini page.) Autoscribe reported "over 140 customers" in November 2023.
Related products:
- Matrix Gemini LIMS Express: off-the-shelf entry LIMS for small labs, "competitively priced" and "low cost," upgradable with modules. (Express page.)
- Matrix Tracker: tracking only, with no testing or result recording. Autoscribe's Catalent case is a Matrix Tracker deployment despite its Matrix Gemini title. (Catalent page.)
- Xybion Pristima, Xybion QMS, and Instem's discovery, study-management, and regulatory products are separate. (Instem acquisition press.)
Matrix Gemini descends from Matrix LIMS; customers on Matrix LIMS since 1990 still upgrade. The latest release note is version 6.6 (13 December 2022). (v6.6 press, 13 Dec 2022.)

Companies House records Xybion Corporation ceasing and Instem Limited starting as person with significant control the same day (filed 28 August 2025). Autoscribe's About page still names Xybion Digital Inc. as parent. | Filing history; Instem press; Business Wire copy |
| Brand | Instem is phasing the Xybion, RockStep Solutions, Autoscribe Informatics, and Strong Tower Solutions names out of marketing. Existing contracts, the billing entity's legal name, and its address stay the same. Both autoscribeinformatics.com and instem.com still sell Matrix Gemini. | Instem brand page |

3. Pharma and biotech relevance
Pharmaceutical QC configuration. It manages raw-material, intermediate, and finished-product samples linked to batch, against FDA 21 CFR Part 11, ISO 17025, and cGxP. Functions: batch and recipe linkage to raw materials and suppliers, stage testing, specifications, auto-approval of in-spec results, product grading, instrument integration, calibration and maintenance, analyst certification, CAPA, environmental monitoring, and "integration with ERP and other corporate systems." (Pharmaceutical page.)
Stability. The stability module manages storage and testing and derives shelf-life statistics. Hemofarm (STADA Group, Vršac, Serbia) started a Matrix Gemini Stability project for Rx, OTC, and consumer-healthcare products in 2019. (Hemofarm press.)
UK pharma QC. Thornton & Ross Ltd, Huddersfield, runs Matrix Gemini in QC for raw materials and finished products, with more efficient reporting, product evaluation, and validation documents, delivered "under the original budget estimate." (Thornton & Ross case.)
Part 11 controls. Per an Autoscribe blog of 24 April 2024, electronic signatures carry name, date, and reason; CoA templates are version-controlled; every change records who, when, and, where required, why. (Part 11 blog.)
GAMP 5. Autoscribe classes Matrix Gemini as GAMP 5 Category 4 because configuration leaves the core code unchanged. (Validation page.)
Autoscribe does not address EU Annex 11.

5. Architecture and deployment
Deployment is on-premises, cloud, or hybrid, with browser access (Instem); local server, remote site, or cloud (Autoscribe). No cloud provider or region is named. For a proof of concept, the customer supplies hardware, operating system, network, a SQL Server or Oracle database license, and Crystal Reports 12 or higher for report work. (POC page.)
Release history:
- 6.0 (12 October 2021; shown at Lab Innovations, 3–4 November 2021): 64-bit, new calculation engine, multiple languages in one LIMS. Core code is separated from configuration so upgrades leave configuration intact. (v6.0 press.)
- 6.5 (22 August 2022): new web application in beta alongside the old one; configuration in a separate, audited, revertible database. (v6.5 press.)
- 6.6 (13 December 2022): grid freeze panes, dropdown result entry, notes in the result grid, multi-screen web tabs. Autoscribe ships upgrades quarterly "on average." (v6.6 press.)
Annual support and maintenance covers help plus core updates and upgrades "for the lifetime of the system." No SLA figures, browser list, RPO/RTO, or security white paper are published.
6. Integrations
| Interface | What Autoscribe documents |
|---|---|
| Instruments | XIDAS/MIDAS background capture; separate automated XLS import (Instem). No driver list. |
| ERP | "Integration with ERP and other corporate systems." No ERP product named. |
| Third-party systems | "Flexible interfaces to instruments and other 3rd party systems." |
| Client portal | Matrix Gemini Web Portal: external clients register samples, track progress, and see only their own reports. |
| Reporting | Crystal Reports 12 or higher (POC requirement). |
| Database | SQL Server or Oracle (POC requirement). |
| Scheduler | Triggers external programs, including email and "any Microsoft program." |
No public API is documented.
7. Pricing and commercial model
Pricing is quote-only. Autoscribe publishes no list price. It offers "competitive, fixed price quotations." Express is a "low cost entry level LIMS." Instem says buyers "can achieve ROI within the first year after purchase." (Product page; Express; About; Instem.)
- Express is the entry offer; the flagship is the configurable system; modules cost extra.
- Annual support and maintenance is a separate agreement covering support and core upgrades.
- Proof of concept: Autoscribe configures an agreed share of requirements, installs for up to one month with a 30-day license and training, and credits 50 percent of POC fees (excluding travel) against a purchase order for "a Matrix system" placed within three months. The POC fee is not published. (POC page.)

Questions a buyer should ask
- Flagship, Express, or Stability, and which modules (XIDAS/MIDAS, ICMS, LES, CAPA, portal) are priced in?
- Concurrent, named, site, or instrument licensing? USDA's 2018 support covered three concurrent users without configuration tools.
- Perpetual, subscription, or hosted, and who holds the SQL Server or Oracle license?
- Is Crystal Reports or another reporting tool included?
- Whose cloud: customer, Autoscribe, or Instem, and in which country?
- Which IQ/OQ/PQ and Part 11 checklist items does Autoscribe deliver?
- What is the current version, and what is the upgrade path from 6.6-era installs?
- Is the quote a Glasgow-style bundle (implementation, interfaces, migration, licences, support)?
- How do "lifetime" upgrades relate to the annual support agreement?
- After the Instem rebrand, which legal entity invoices?
8. Implementation and validation support
The customer owns compliance. Autoscribe's validation services cover a user requirements specification, functional specification, system validation plan, 21 CFR Part 11 adherence check, risk assessment, IQ, OQ, PQ, and a signed validation report, plus a downloadable Part 11 checklist. Matrix Gemini stays in GAMP 5 Category 4 because configuration does not touch core code. (Validation.) The pharmaceutical configuration ships with "comprehensive validation documentation" developed under Autoscribe's ISO 9001 system.
The proof of concept covers requirements review, configuration to an agreed percentage, up to a month on site, training, and a 30-day license.
Support: annual support and maintenance (Autoscribe); help desk, training, implementation assistance, and "24-hour support" (Instem).
9. Customer evidence
| Account | Evidence | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Thornton & Ross, Huddersfield | Autoscribe case: Matrix Gemini in QC for raw materials and finished products; better reporting, product evaluation, and validation documents, under budget; customer quote on configuration tools and help desk. Autoscribe calls Thornton & Ross the UK's largest independent pharmaceutical manufacturer. | Vendor-written; no year, version, or user count. |
| Hemofarm, Vršac (STADA Group) | 3 June 2019: Matrix Gemini Stability project for Rx, OTC, and consumer-healthcare products; John Boother quoted on configuration flexibility. | Project start. |
| University of Glasgow Veterinary Diagnostic Services | £202,652 LIMS award, 14 user licences, concluded 1 December 2025. | Veterinary; product not named. |
| USDA ARS, University Park, PA | Customized Matrix Gemini system (2016, via reseller) and support (2018). | Procurement. |
| Catalent, Kansas City | Matrix Tracker, not Matrix Gemini. | Different product. |
10. Competitive and third-party context
No Gartner, Forrester, or IDC evaluation of Matrix Gemini is cited. Scientific Computing World and Technology Networks republish Autoscribe releases; the Technology Networks copy of the 2022 v6.5 release now carries "Autoscribe Informatics, now a part of Instem," added after the 2025 deal. Companies House and USAspending are the independent records.
On 2 Oct 2026, openFDA drug enforcement, device enforcement, and 510(k) data held no record for Autoscribe or Matrix Gemini. FDA's warning-letter index and EMA's site search could not be queried that day, so no inspection record is cited. (An unrelated 510(k) for Matrix Data Management System, a blood-pressure product, is not this LIMS.)
