Product: IDBS Polar, marketed as a BioPharma Lifecycle Management (BPLM) platform and as one lab informatics platform with ELN, LES, and LIMS capabilities. Named areas: Explorer, Data backbone, Integrations, Insight, Advance, Inventory, Control, Request, Chemistry, Collaboration, and an Accelerator library. Vendor: IDBS, part of Danaher. UK address: SPACE, 68 Chertsey Road, Woking, GU21 5BJ. US address: 2 Seaport Lane, 7th Floor, Boston, MA 02210. U.S. federal awards to "ID BUSINESS SOLUTIONS INC" cover older IDBS products, not Polar. Category: R&D and process-development lab informatics. Adjacent. Polar's LIMS capabilities (inventory, sample and material genealogy) sit inside the platform, and IDBS positions it through scale-up and tech transfer "to support manufacturing." It is not a standalone GMP LIMS or a plant MES. Verification date: 2026-10-03. Scope: Public sources only.
1. Overview
IDBS Polar is Danaher's biopharma R&D informatics platform: one cloud system that combines an ELN (Explorer), a spreadsheet-style LES (Advance), and LIMS-style inventory and genealogy, built for work from preclinical through process development, scale-up, and tech transfer. It is adjacent because its LIMS functions live inside an R&D platform rather than a standalone GMP QC LIMS and it runs no commercial batch records, and IDBS sells it to biopharma R&D and process-development groups in either a GxP or a non-GxP configuration.
The product page is headed "Beyond an Electronic Lab Notebook" and calls Polar an enterprise lab informatics platform with ELN, LES, and LIMS capabilities for iterative work from preclinical through development, scale-up, and tech transfer to support manufacturing. (Polar product page.) The December 2020 launch release, datelined Guildford, named the category BioPharma Lifecycle Management, "aimed at streamlining drug development and manufacturing in biopharma research." (Launch, 4 Dec 2020.)
Polar captures experiments (Explorer), runs structured workflows (Advance), tracks samples, materials, and equipment (Inventory), and adds request handling, process-parameter control, chemistry registration, partner data entry, analytics (Insight), and prebuilt workflow accelerators.
Boundaries:
- Not a standalone GMP LIMS. Inventory is LIMS capability inside Polar. IDBS names no separate LIMS product, version, or QC sample-management system of record.
- Not a plant MES. "Support manufacturing" and "pilot plant" describe scope. IDBS describes no commercial electronic batch records, packaging-line weigh and dispense, or shop-floor equipment control.
- Not E-WorkBook, ActivityBase, or InforSense. IDBS calls Polar a cloud-based next-generation evolution of E-WorkBook. E-WorkBook Cloud dates to 2017; Polar launched 4 December 2020. ActivityBase and InforSense are older products.

3. Pharma and biotech relevance
- R&D through tech transfer. Polar covers preclinical through development, scale-up, and tech transfer to support manufacturing, with workflows "from discovery to pilot plant." IDBS does not say it executes commercial GMP batch records.
- GxP is a configuration. Customers choose GxP-compliant or non-GxP configurations. IDBS's knowledge-base article (posted 17 July 2025, updated 8 May 2026) says Polar is cloud-based, keeps a repository and audit trail, and supports electronic signatures that facilitate compliance with FDA 21 CFR Part 11. SoftwareOne says role-based access, audit, version control, and electronic signatures support Part 11 and EudraLex Volume 4 Annex 11. Neither is an FDA or EMA certificate. (GxP article; SoftwareOne.)
- Market reach, two different counts. 2020 release: 22 of the top 25 global pharmaceutical companies and "over 50,000 researchers in 25 countries." 2026 product page: 35 years of expertise, 75% of the top 20 biopharma companies by market cap in Q2 2026, and 75% of the top 20 customers for over 10 years. Both are IDBS company-wide counts, not a Polar install base.
- Percentage tiles. The product page shows 60% less time on compliance activities, 50% less regulatory report preparation, and a doubled sample count, each footnoted "Customer data on file at IDBS," with no account, baseline, or year.
- Awards. The page footnotes a European informatics ranking, Asia Pacific biologics awards, a pharmatechoutlook list, an ABEA 2025 software award, and a GxP comparison "data on file" against seven unnamed vendors.

The February 2026 product-guide post repeats the ELN, LES, and LIMS unification line. (Guide post.)
5. Architecture and deployment
Polar is cloud-based (GxP article) and, per SoftwareOne, a SaaS offering for experimental design, execution, verification, and analysis. It runs in GxP or non-GxP configurations, with low-code or no-code workflows and integrations in and out, implemented by IDBS or a technology partner. The 2020 release says Polar is built for rapid deployment on a contextualized data backbone.
Not published: hosting region, tenant model, an on-premise option, database, uptime SLA, backup RPO/RTO, encryption algorithm, or a validation package. The site terms' references to downloads, CD-ROM dispatch, and license keycodes belong to an older web shop, not to Polar delivery.
The history page dates the Skyland Analytics acquisition (biopharmaceutical manufacturing data management and analytics) to 2021 and does not link it to Polar's code.
6. Integrations
- Product page: pre-built connectors and APIs for instruments and systems, data in and out, implemented by IDBS or a partner. No ERP, LIMS, MES, or QMS is named.
- Product page: Insight exports to other data stores and third-party BI tools.
- SoftwareOne: a "toolkit of connectors and APIs" to connect equipment, systems, and tools. No product names.
- 2020 release: contrasts Polar with paper, Excel, equipment, notebooks, and databases, as a problem statement.
IDBS publishes no named interface catalog.
7. Commercial model
Price: quote-only. The product page, product-guide post, GxP article, Danaher page, and SoftwareOne listing print no license, user, or module price. The site terms say prices and availability can change, WorldPay cards can pay for site orders, and taxes can differ from the billing screen; they state no Polar price.
Public procurement records show no Polar purchase:
- EU TED. A search on 3 Oct 2026 found no notice naming IDBS Polar. Centre for Process Innovation (spelled "Centre for Process Innnovation Limited" in the XML), notice 438182-2016: lots 1 to 5 are unnamed ELN, inventory, workflow, and visualisation software; lot 6 is support of "IDBS E-WorkBook PC client (currently EWB10.0.3.3)." Framework estimate GBP 250,000 to GBP 800,000. A 2016 contract notice for E-WorkBook, not an award and not a Polar price. (TED 438182-2016.)
- EU TED, Graz. Medizinische Universität Graz, notice 263180-2022, names ID Business Solutions, GB604105690, 2 Occam Court, Surrey Research Park, Guildford, GU2 7QB, as one member of a group on an NGS pre-sequencing contract. Group total EUR 26,371; not an IDBS-only figure.
- USAspending. Awards to ID BUSINESS SOLUTIONS INC describe ActivityBase, InforSense, and unnamed IDBS software. None is Polar.
- SAM.gov. Seven opportunity titles; two name older IDBS products, none names Polar.
- UK Contracts Finder. Its keyword filter returned only unrelated notices, so no UK result is reported.
Questions a buyer should ask
- GxP or non-GxP, and which areas (Explorer, Advance, Inventory, Insight, Chemistry, Control, Request) are in the entitlement?
- Is Inventory the whole LIMS scope, or is a separate sample-management system still needed?
- What is the user or site metric, and what is excluded (Collaboration partners, AI/ML usage, accelerators)?
- Hosting location, tenant model, and any on-premise option.
- Which instrument connectors are included and which are built?
- What must IDBS or the partner configure, and are validation scripts delivered?
- How does Polar relate to a remaining E-WorkBook or ActivityBase estate?
- Is the Part 11 and Annex 11 wording a contractual warranty or a feature description?
8. Implementation and validation support
IDBS or a preferred partner implements Polar; SoftwareOne says IDBS professional services do the configuration. No timeline, rate, or GAMP 5 category is published.
The GxP article covers audit trail, workflow control, electronic signatures, access control, and encryption at rest and in transit in general terms, with no test report. IDBS publishes no IQ/OQ set. The percentage tiles are customer data on file, not an implementation benchmark.
9. Customer evidence
| Account | What is public | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Unnamed logos | Some companies gave permission to use logos; readers are told to ask IDBS about the rest. | No names in the page text. |
| "75% of the top 20" | Q2 2026 market cap, plus 75% customers for over 10 years. | IDBS-wide, "data on file." |
| "22 of the top 25" | 2020 release, plus 50,000 researchers in 25 countries. | Older company statistic. |
| Cytiva | Umay Saplakoglu quoted in the 2020 IDBS release on siloed development knowledge. | Not a statement that Cytiva runs Polar. |
| Centre for Process Innovation | 2016 E-WorkBook support notice (section 7). | Not Polar. |
| U.S. agencies | ActivityBase, InforSense, and unnamed IDBS software awards. | Not Polar. |
10. Competitive and third-party context
SoftwareOne repeats IDBS's "world's first" BPLM line and the Part 11 / Annex 11 feature claim, with no independent evaluation and no price.
Danaher describes IDBS as purpose-built software across the BioPharma lifecycle and supply chain with "more than 30 years" of informatics experience; IDBS says 35 years. Danaher does not describe Polar's modules.
11. Changes and renames
- 1989: founded.
- 2017: E-WorkBook Cloud; Danaher acquisition (late October / end of 2017).
- 4 December 2020: Polar launch, Guildford dateline. Headquarters is now Woking.
- 17 July 2025: GxP article posted; updated 8 May 2026.
- February 2026: product-guide post.
Polar is a current product. E-WorkBook is the predecessor, not another name for Polar.
