Product: STARLIMS LIMS, sold alongside separately named SDMS, LES, ELN (including Labstep), Advanced Analytics, QM Essentials, and MODA-EM products. Vendor: STARLIMS Corporation, Hollywood, Florida (Florida document S15157). Formerly Abbott Informatics. Category: Laboratory information management system (LIMS) for pharmaceutical, biotech, QC, public-health, and clinical labs, with adjacent informatics products. Not an MES, ERP, or QMS. Verification date: 2026-10-03. Scope: Public web sources only.
1. Overview
STARLIMS is a long-established commercial LIMS, formerly Abbott Informatics, now independent and backed by Turn/River Capital since January 2026. It sells a Quality Manufacturing LIMS to pharma, biotech, and device QC labs, a SaaS edition for small batch manufacturers, and a separate catalog of SDMS, LES, ELN, analytics, and environmental-monitoring products; its public-sector base runs from U.S. federal health agencies to European police forensic labs.
STARLIMS was founded in 1986. Its homepage claims 2,000+ laboratories, 700+ customers, and 85+ countries; the January 2026 investment release says "over 1,100 customers." It serves R&D, quality control and manufacturing, public health, and clinical diagnostics. (Homepage; Turn/River announcement.) Target buyers are pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical-device manufacturers (Life sciences); small and medium batch manufacturers in pharma, food and beverage, and consumer goods (QM Essentials); and public-health and clinical labs. A 2023 interview adds CMO/CDMO, oil and gas, chemicals, agrochemicals, automotive, and lab services. (La Gazette interview.)
Outside the LIMS:
- MES. STARLIMS interfaces to third-party MES. (Digital transformation article.)
- ERP and QMS. SAP is an integration target. STARLIMS sells no QMS; MODA-EM mentions CAPA as a customer activity, not a module.
- Abbott diagnostics and AlinIQ are separate Abbott products.
- SDMS, LES, ELN, Advanced Analytics, QM Essentials, and MODA-EM are separately named products, though STARLIMS markets them as one platform.

3. Pharma and biotech relevance
The Quality Manufacturing LIMS targets pharmaceutical, medical-device, and biotech manufacturers. STARLIMS pitches batch release, method transfer from R&D into QC and manufacturing, and compliance capture. (Life sciences; QM LIMS.) The QM LIMS ships more than 15 standard workflows (batch testing with CoA, stability, environmental testing, materials receiving, contract-lab testing, continuous process, sample testing, outsourcing), hundreds of standard reports, full audit trails, and electronic signatures. STARLIMS does not claim FDA or 21 CFR Part 11 certification for the LIMS.
Its Part 11 claims attach to SDMS. The SDMS v12.2 announcement says the product was designed to help with 21 CFR Part 11 (record creation, audit trails, electronic signatures, data security) and keeps raw data as the original record. A "Lab 4.0" article calls SDMS "designed to be 21 CFR Part 11 compliant." STARLIMS publishes nothing on EU Annex 11 or GAMP 5.
QM Essentials, the small-batch SaaS edition, lists pharmaceutical manufacturers among its buyers and says its simpler scope means less time to validate.
Pharma-adjacent references (section 9): Bayer crop-science regulatory and GxP labs, GSK pharma and consumer-health sites, and Douglas Pharmaceuticals.

5. Architecture and deployment
STARLIMS offers on-premises, cloud hosting, and cloud subscription. Both cloud models run on an AWS private cloud managed by STARLIMS, and customers can "add more licenses over time." (Deployment options.)
Hosting Services are a monthly subscription. The service includes public or private AWS cloud, infrastructure software licensing, "application high availability of 99.9%," development, test, and production environments, patching and malware protection, monitoring, database backup and retention, disaster recovery with a 4-hour RTO and 15-minute RPO, and "compliance with HIPAA and GDPR requirements." (Cloud hosting resource.)
QM Essentials is the SaaS edition for smaller batch manufacturers: subscription, five-user minimum, support included. It runs on Quality Manufacturing LIMS technology and scales "without the need for a major system migration."
Versions in circulation: QM2014.R1; technology 11.1 (August 2015); SDMS v12.2; and version 12.3, "an HTML5-based cloud environment," which Bayer described as an upcoming upgrade in May 2025.
6. Integrations
Named in product material: Empower and Chromeleon; NWA for SPC; SAP ("the only certified SAP connector"); SDMS web services to LIMS, CDS, ELN, and SAP; MODA-EM to the LIMS; LES with the LIMS at Bayer. The LIMS takes raw-material and batch data from an MES or ERP and accepts QR and RFID scans. STARLIMS publishes no interface specifications.
Technology partners: AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Salesforce (Tableau), and Northwest Analytics. Implementation partner CSols worked alongside STARLIMS at GSK. Sterling Computers Corporation resold STARLIMS maintenance to the VA.
7. Pricing and commercial model
Pricing is quote-only. STARLIMS publishes no list price, rate card, or per-user fee. QM Essentials is "subscription-based" with "a lower upfront cost," "starting at a minimum of five users." Hosting is a monthly subscription. The $123 million Abbott paid in 2010 bought the company. The 2021 and 2026 deals did not disclose terms.
